Phillies option Garrett Stubbs to Triple-A Lehigh Valley
The Philadelphia Phillies have sent catcher Garrett Stubbs to their minor league team, the Triple-A Lehigh Valley. This decision was made to allow Rafael Marchán to become the backup for starting catcher J.T. Realmuto. Stubbs had a tough season last year, hitting .207 in the majors. He had an option remaining that allowed the team to send him down without exposing him to waivers. Marchán, on the other hand, did not have this option. The Phillies wanted to retain both players, leading to this choice. Dave Dombrowski, the team's president of baseball operations, discussed the business aspect of this decision. Stubbs served as the primary backup for Realmuto over the past three years, hitting .222 overall. He became a fan favorite, known for creating a popular victory song for the team during their 2022 World Series run. Marchán, who is 26 years old, has performed better statistically in his limited major league games, with a batting average of .279. While he may provide better performance on the field, it is uncertain if he can match the positive clubhouse presence Stubbs brought. Realmuto is in the final year of his contract, and both he and the team have shown interest in a contract extension. The upcoming season will be significant for both the player and the team.
