Philippines reports significant COVID-19 vaccine wastage of nearly 69 million doses
The Commission on Audit (COA) reported that the Philippines wasted nearly 68.7 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, significantly more than the previously reported 7 million. This wastage represents 27% of the total vaccine supply, exceeding the acceptable limit. Most of the wasted doses, about 57.3 million, expired due to poor planning and logistical issues. The COA highlighted that some vaccines were shipped past their expiration dates, and challenges included low public uptake and inadequate storage facilities. Additionally, P152 million worth of unused ultra-low-temperature freezers, intended for vaccine storage, are now idle. The COA's findings raise concerns about broader inefficiencies in government procurement and accountability for these issues remains limited.
