Philippines rejects China's South China Sea territorial claims
The Philippine defense chief has strongly criticized China's claims in the South China Sea, calling them "the biggest fiction and lie." He stated that no Southeast Asian country will accept these claims. This comment came as tensions rise in the region, particularly over the Scarborough Shoal. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro made his remarks on Monday, coinciding with reports from the Philippine coast guard about new incidents involving Chinese forces at Scarborough Shoal. A Chinese military helicopter reportedly followed a Philippine plane during a patrolling mission. Furthermore, Chinese forces have set up a floating barrier to restrict Filipino fishermen from entering a lagoon in the area. Chinese officials have not responded immediately, but China often claims historic rights over the Scarborough Shoal and much of the South China Sea. An international arbitration ruling in 2016 dismissed these claims, but China has ignored the decision. Speaking in Palawan, Teodoro emphasized the need for a stronger defense strategy and increased security cooperation with allies to counter Chinese aggression. He asserted that no member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) recognizes China's so-called "10-dash line" which outlines its territorial claims. He characterized Chinese President Xi Jinping’s policies as aggressive and damaging to international relationships. Teodoro indicated that Xi's leadership style could threaten his power within China and noted that it is not reflective of the Chinese people's views. In response to China's actions, the Philippines plans to reinforce its alliances with other nations. The country will sign a visiting forces agreement with New Zealand and is close to finalizing a similar deal with Canada. Negotiations for an agreement with France are also in progress. Upcoming discussions between U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Teodoro in Manila will focus on concerns about China's assertiveness in the region and will explore ways to strengthen the U.S.-Philippines alliance.
