Philippines loses UN Security Council bid, DFA cites geopolitical forces

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro attributed the Philippines' failed bid for a nonpermanent UN Security Council seat to "forces in geopolitical issues," without elaborating further. The loss occurred during a House appropriations committee hearing on the DFA's proposed 2027 budget. Lazaro described the campaign as "herculean" and said she could explain the geopolitical factors in writing. The Philippines lost to Kyrgyzstan in June for the 2026–2027 term, while Malacañang separately blamed "political noise from obstructionists" for the defeat. The DFA spent P52.5 million of a P70 million allocation across its 2025 and 2026 budgets for the bid. The Philippines previously served on the council four times, while Kyrgyzstan had never held a seat before.
