Philippines defends Typhon missile system as self-defense against China’s claims of arms race

The Philippines has denied China's claims of an arms race, stating that its acquisition of the Typhon missile system is for self-defense. Philippine Defence Chief Gilberto Teodoro Jnr emphasized the need for credible deterrence amid ongoing territorial disputes. Teodoro criticized China's interference in the Philippines' defense plans, asserting that the country is merely responding to threats. He noted that China, as the larger nation, should set a positive example rather than accuse others of escalating tensions. Analysts support Teodoro's view, highlighting the significant imbalance in defense capabilities between the Philippines and China. They also point out that the Philippines lags behind its regional neighbors in military technology.
