Philippines begins election period with gun ban and checkpoints

The Philippines has entered the election period ahead of the May 12 midterm polls. Starting January 12, a gun ban and checkpoints will be enforced to enhance security and prevent violence during the election season. Checkpoints will allow only visual inspections of vehicles. Police cannot open trunks or frisk passengers. Campaigning for senatorial candidates begins on February 11, while House of Representatives candidates can start on March 28. Candidates are already displaying campaign materials, but the Commission on Elections cannot act against them until the official campaign period starts. The election period will conclude on June 11.
