PhilHealth increases animal bite treatment package in Philippines

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) is reminding members to seek medical help for animal bites. This is in recognition of National Rabies Awareness Month. They encourage anyone who has been bitten or scratched by an animal to take advantage of their Animal Bite Treatment (ABT) package. The ABT package has increased from 3,000 pesos to 5,850 pesos. It includes important treatments such as rabies vaccines, wound care, tetanus shots, antibiotics, and necessary medical supplies. PhilHealth President Dr. Edwin Mercado stated that the package is available at over 700 accredited providers and that this number will continue to grow. Dr. Mercado emphasized the seriousness of rabies, which can be fatal, but can be prevented with immediate vaccination. He encouraged members not to hesitate in seeking treatment after an animal bite. Rabies is a significant issue in the Philippines. The country ranks sixth in the world for rabies cases. The Department of Health reported an increase of rabies cases from 235 in 2020 to 426 in 2024, all of which were fatal. From January to March 2025, there were 55 reported cases, showing a decrease from the previous year. Mercado also reminded pet owners to vaccinate their animals as a key preventive measure against rabies. For more information about the ABT package, PhilHealth members can contact their 24/7 support line.
