PFAS toxins contaminate European wines, levels sharply increase
A recent study reveals alarmingly high levels of the environmental toxin PFAS, specifically TFA, in European wines, with concentrations increasing dramatically in recent years. The analysis of 49 wines by PAN Europe showed TFA levels rising significantly since 1988, with the highest concentrations found in wines produced after 2020. TFA, a breakdown product of larger PFAS molecules, is now classified as toxic to aquatic life. Experts attribute the presence of TFA to its widespread use in refrigerants and pesticides, and its water solubility allows it to accumulate in the environment. The study highlights the need for stricter regulations and reduced PFAS use.
