Peruvian play explores Japanese-Peruvian cultural fusion through personal stories
A new play, "Eso de ser ainoko," explores the cultural fusion of Peruvian and Japanese identities through personal storytelling. The play examines the concept of "ainoko," a Japanese term for mixed heritage. The play, written by Miguel Ángel Vallejo Sameshima and directed by Renzo García Chiok, uses autofiction, documentary theater, and physical theater. It features actors portraying the author's reflections on his Andean and Japanese roots, incorporating traditional elements. The production, which won a 2024 PUCP creation project award, will include a book release, post-show discussions, and Japanese and Peruvian food sales. Performances are scheduled for late May and early June at El Galpón Espacio.
