Peru's Fujimori Deploys Military to Combat Extortion, Seeks Legislative Powers

Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori announced that the Armed Forces will be deployed on the streets and in the public transportation system in the coming days to combat extortion and restore order. She stated this during a live TikTok broadcast. Fujimori also said a request for legislative powers will be presented next week, delayed by bureaucratic issues with deputy minister appointments. She confirmed that former President Alejandro Toledo's pardon request will be evaluated with technical, medical, and humanitarian considerations. The government continues expelling high-danger criminals, including members of the Tren de Aragua gang. During a visit to Piura, Fujimori criticized the previous administration for inaction and prioritized protecting vulnerable groups and agriculture ahead of the El Niño phenomenon. She also received ten Peruvians repatriated from Venezuela following earthquakes there.
