Perseverance rover gains independent navigation with new software upgrade

Mars rover Perseverance now has GPS-like navigation after years of relying on Earth for positioning. The rover previously required daily communication with Earth to determine its exact location, a process prone to errors and delays. A new software upgrade allows it to calculate its position independently. This upgrade, called Mars Global Localization, enables Perseverance to match panoramic photos with onboard maps, allowing for greater daily travel distances without waiting for instructions from Earth.
