Perseverance rover discovers green spots in Martian rock suggesting water interaction
NASA's Perseverance rover has discovered unexpected green spots in Martian rock, suggesting past interactions with liquid water. This finding comes as the rover nears four years of exploring Mars for signs of ancient microbial life. The green spots were captured in a nighttime image of the Malgosa Crest abrasion patch. The rover created a small abrasion patch to examine the rock, revealing a large green spot about two millimeters in diameter. While similar green spots on Earth form through chemical reactions involving water and iron, the exact cause of these Martian features remains unclear. The rover could not analyze the spots closely due to space limitations.
