Perpignan’s new environmental officer made his second seizure of protected birds, including a chick and a Venezuelan red siskin, illegally held in the Bas-Vernet district. Following witness reports, police investigated and summoned the owner; on July 30, officers seized several European goldfinches and a red siskin from cages at his home. Wildlife trafficking ranks fourth among global illegal markets, after drugs, counterfeiting, and human trafficking. Penalties reach three years’ imprisonment and €150,000; seized birds may be released once courts approve.
