Pekerman backs Lorenzo, says Colombia still far from World Cup glory

Former Colombia coach José Pekerman defended current coach Néstor Lorenzo, stating Colombia remains far from winning a World Cup and requires long-term stability. He emphasized that major results demand years of work, not immediate outcomes. Pekerman praised Lorenzo for overcoming a crisis after Colombia missed the 2022 Qatar World Cup, noting three coaching changes had previously disrupted progress. He argued frequent coaching changes harm development and stressed the importance of maintaining consistent processes. The Colombian Football Federation renewed Lorenzo's contract on July 23, 2026. Since taking charge, Lorenzo has led 51 matches with 31 wins, 12 draws, and 8 losses, including World Cup and Copa América appearances.
