PCMC successfully performs first open fetal surgery in Philippines

The Philippine Children's Medical Center (PCMC) has successfully completed the nation's first open fetal surgery, a procedure to correct Myelomeningocele. The surgery, performed on March 26, 2025, involved a 30-year-old pregnant woman at 25 weeks gestation. The procedure, also known as fetal spina bifida repair, aims to close a spinal defect in the fetus. The PCMC team, assisted by specialists from Colombia, considers this a major milestone in Philippine medical history. The hospital is a Nationalized Center for Specialized Health Care.
