PCB challenges order to release confidential financial records
The Pakistan Cricket Board has challenged orders from the Pakistan Information Commission to disclose confidential financial records, including budgets, contracts, and salary details, citing potential harm to its commercial interests. The PCB filed a petition with the Islamabad High Court against the July 9 directives issued under the Right of Access to Information Act, 2017. The commission demanded the PCB release annual budgets for 2023-26, detailed spending records, player and employee contracts, salary information, and expenses related to this year's T20 World Cup, including travel details. It also sought information on upgrades to Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. A PCB source described the situation as a "Catch-22 situation," warning compliance could encourage other institutions to seek access to records, including Pakistan Super League data. The PCB argued it operates in a competitive international sports environment and receives no federal government or Consolidated Fund funding, unlike public departments. It claimed revealing private salary structures and contractual terms could damage negotiations and business relationships. The board requested interim relief, stating that once personal financial information becomes public, any damage to its interests, contracts, and third-party privacy could be irreversible.
