Paxton man faces motor vehicle homicide charges in North Reading crash that killed two

A 21-year-old Paxton man faces felony motor vehicle homicide charges after a Saturday night crash in North Reading killed two people, including a minor. Matthew Sweeney is also charged with operating under the influence and operating to endanger. Around 10:45 p.m., Sweeney allegedly drove an Acura MDX at high speed on Route 28, colliding with a Honda HR-V stopped at a red light near North and Main streets. The Honda caught fire, and despite rescue attempts, both victims died at the scene. The victims have not been publicly identified. Sweeney was arrested and is expected to be arraigned Monday in Woburn District Court, with the crash still under investigation.
