Pakistan becomes third-largest importer of Chinese solar panels
Pakistan has become the third-largest global importer of Chinese solar panels, importing 13 gigawatts in the first half of the fiscal year. This rapid growth positions Pakistan among the top solar energy markets within just a few years. The surge in imports now represents over 30% of Pakistan's total solar production, which reached 46 gigawatts in 2023. The decline in solar panel prices and increased demand from consumers and businesses are key factors driving this trend. Government actions, such as removing a 17% sales tax and implementing net metering, have further accelerated the adoption of solar energy. This shift is helping to address rising electricity costs and enhance energy security while promoting environmental sustainability.
