Pacific Islands Forum leaders complete fact-finding mission to New Caledonia after riots
A team of Pacific Islands Forum leaders recently completed a fact-finding mission to New Caledonia, which is recovering from violent riots that resulted in 13 deaths and extensive property damage. The delegation included leaders from Tonga, Cook Islands, and Fiji.
During their visit, the leaders met with various stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, and community representatives. They discussed the economic crisis in New Caledonia, highlighting concerns about unemployment and the need for ongoing financial support from France.
The Forum leaders emphasized the importance of regional integration for New Caledonia, encouraging collaboration with neighboring Pacific nations. A report on the mission will be prepared but is not expected to be discussed until the next Forum meeting in 2025.
