Oxford Dictionary names brain rot as Word of the Year for 2024
The Oxford Dictionary has named "brain rot" as its Word of the Year for 2024. The term, originally used by philosopher Henry David Thoreau in 1854, describes the effects of consuming excessive low-quality online content. Its usage has surged by 230% this year. "Brain rot" now refers to the mental state caused by constant scrolling on platforms like TikTok and the anxiety from doomscrolling. Researchers link it to memory loss and reduced attention spans, reflecting concerns about the impact of digital culture on younger generations. Oxford Languages President Caspar Grathwohl noted the term's adoption by Gen Z and Gen Alpha, highlighting their awareness of social media's effects. Other dictionaries have also selected their own Words of the Year, reflecting various cultural trends.
