Overcrowded prisons in England and Wales increase violence risks
Prisons in England and Wales are facing severe overcrowding, leading to increased violence and drug use, according to a report from the House of Commons Public Affairs Committee. Plans to add 20,000 prison places have been delayed until 2031. The report highlights that a quarter of prisoners are sharing cells meant for one person, contributing to higher rates of violence and self-harm. The situation has forced courts to delay serious trials, risking a backlog in the criminal justice system. In response, the Ministry of Justice has begun releasing some prisoners early. However, MPs stress the need to proceed with plans to expand prison capacity to avoid further gridlock in the system.
