Over 300 malicious Android apps downloaded 60 million times

techradar.com

Bitdefender has uncovered a major ad fraud campaign involving over 300 Android apps. These apps have been installed more than 60 million times from the Google Play Store. The apps, which included utility tools like QR scanners and health trackers, displayed unwanted ads and attempted to steal users’ personal information. Most of these apps were available for older Android versions, mainly Android 13 and earlier. Most of the victims were from Brazil, the US, Mexico, Turkey, and South Korea. Once installed, these apps could hide their icons and display ads over other applications. Some also tried to collect sensitive data such as passwords and credit card information. Bitdefender noted that while most of the apps have been removed from the Play Store, those still installed on devices pose a risk. Users should be cautious if their devices start lagging, overheating, or showing strange behavior. To stay safe, it is recommended to uninstall any unfamiliar apps and to keep devices updated with the latest Android version. Currently, Android 15 is the latest version available.
