Otaru temple offers tree burial as grave relocation rises in Hokkaido

The number of people relocating graves in Hokkaido has more than doubled in ten years, with over 13,000 cases in fiscal 2023, the second highest in Japan. This increase is driven by fewer descendants and families living far away, leading to inquiries about grave relocation and closure. Tree burial, a simpler alternative, is gaining popularity. Tokugenji Temple in Otaru opened 170 tree burial plots in July, with ten reservations already made, offering a solution for those struggling with grave maintenance.
