Orchard Road in Singapore prepares for redevelopment to boost retail appeal

Orchard Road in Singapore is set for redevelopment as many older malls struggle with low foot traffic and high vacancy rates. The Far East Shopping Center, for example, has many empty units and lacks connections to the busy Orchard MRT station. New projects are underway, including a large mixed-use development by Hotel Properties Ltd, which will feature a hotel, residential units, and retail space. City Developments Ltd is also planning to redevelop Delfi Orchard, enhancing the area’s appeal. Starting in 2025, the Urban Redevelopment Authority will improve Orchard Road with a new green connection and pedestrian-friendly spaces. However, challenges remain due to complex ownership structures of older properties and the need for regulatory approvals.
