OpenAI's 88-hour Navier-Stokes solution sparks plagiarism dispute

bbc.com (French) —

OpenAI claims to have solved a 90-year-old unsolved problem in the Navier-Stokes equations in 88 hours using 10,000 AI agents, but the announcement has sparked plagiarism accusations from mathematicians. Tristan Buckmaster of New York University alleges OpenAI learned of his and Anthropic's Levent Alpöge's progress on the problem via its Codex tool before publishing its own solution. OpenAI denies accessing user work, calling the simultaneous research "extraordinary" and stating its results differ significantly. The solution, announced Tuesday, has not been independently verified or accepted by the Clay Mathematics Institute, which offers a Millennium Prize for such problems. OpenAI says the AI agents exchanged nearly 3 million messages and used 130 billion output tokens to achieve the result.
