Old video misattributed to recent Pakistan train attack
After a train attack in southwest Pakistan that killed about 60 people, a video showing gunmen warning China has gained attention. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which claimed responsibility for the attack, has a history of targeting Chinese interests in the region. However, the video is not new; it dates back to May 2019. The footage shows a threat from the BLA asking China and Pakistan to "withdraw from Balochistan if you don't want to die." This video resurfaced after the BLA bombed a railway track and stormed a train on March 11, resulting in many casualties, including the attackers themselves. The BLA has accused outsiders of exploiting Balochistan, a province rich in minerals but also impoverished. The group's focus has often been on Chinese nationals and interests, as China is heavily involved in energy and mining projects in the area. Some online posts mistakenly suggest the video is recent. Investigations show it corresponds with a 2019 news report about the BLA's attack on a luxury hotel in Gwadar, which was aimed at Chinese and Pakistani investors. No official reports confirm the BLA issued a new warning to China or Pakistan following the recent train siege. The earlier video highlights ongoing tensions in the region related to foreign involvement in local resources.
