Ocean protection lacks funding to meet 2030 goals

A new report reveals that governments are only spending 10% of the funds needed to protect 30% of the world's oceans by 2030. This shortfall threatens global ocean conservation goals. The report, released by several NGOs, highlights that only $1.2 billion is currently allocated annually, while $15.8 billion is required. This is despite a 2022 agreement by 196 countries to establish marine protected areas. The findings come ahead of the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, starting June 9th, where leaders will discuss increasing funding and addressing the "alarmingly" slow progress in ocean protection.
