Obesity-related hospital admissions higher in Northern England than the South

Obesity-related hospital admissions are significantly higher in Northern England compared to the South. Six of the top ten worst-affected areas are in the North, with Manchester having the highest burden. The research analyzed data from 163 NHS trusts, examining admissions for conditions linked to obesity, including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke. Type 2 diabetes was a major driver of admissions in the most affected areas. The findings suggest a concentration of obesity-related health pressures in urban and post-industrial Northern areas, potentially linked to long-term health inequalities and deprivation.
