NYPD Commissioner appoints Ryan Merola as chief of staff, marking historic promotion
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has appointed Ryan Merola as her chief of staff, making him the highest-ranking openly gay officer in the department. This marks Tisch's first personnel decision since taking office. Merola has a long history in public service, previously serving as chief of staff under Tisch at the sanitation department and working in various NYPD divisions. His appointment is seen as a significant change in leadership style compared to Tisch's predecessors. The appointment also results in the reassignment of former acting Chief of Staff Tarik Sheppard, who returns to lead the NYPD's press office. Sheppard's dual role had been controversial, especially following a public altercation with Interim Police Commissioner Tom Donlon.
