NYC Mayor Adams seeks more migrant funding as Governor Hochul declines request

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has requested additional funding from state lawmakers to address the ongoing migrant crisis. However, Governor Kathy Hochul has stated that no new resources will be allocated for New York City in the upcoming state budget. Adams highlighted that the city has spent approximately $6.9 billion on migrant care since spring 2022. He warned that without state aid, the city faces a $1.1 billion budget shortfall, which could lead to spending cuts or revenue increases. During the hearing, it was revealed that the city has not fully utilized the $2.4 billion in migrant funding provided by the state last year. Adams also discussed other priorities, including tax reforms and changes to mental health and criminal justice laws, but these issues received less attention.
