NRAO optimistic about resolving radio frequency issues with Starlink satellites
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is optimistic about resolving radio frequency issues with SpaceX's Starlink satellites. They are implementing a system to share operational data, which helps coordinate satellite communications to minimize interference with radio observations. The NRAO operates the Green Bank Observatory, which is sensitive to radio waves. To protect it, a National Radio Quiet Zone was established, limiting certain transmissions nearby. However, Wi-Fi signals from homes still cause some interference, though not critically. Next-generation cellular satellites may pose a greater challenge due to their stronger signals. The NRAO is exploring technical solutions, such as notch filters, to manage this interference. Recently, Starlink expanded its service in the Quiet Zone, addressing local residents' needs while maintaining radio observation capabilities.
