Nottinghamshire council plans fifth bin for food waste under new recycling rules

Broxtowe Borough Council is considering adding a fifth bin for food waste to households as part of new recycling rules. The government’s "simpler recycling" initiative, launched in October 2023, allows more items to be recycled. Households will need to separate waste into five bins: black, green, garden, food, and glass. Weekly food waste collections are set to begin on October 1, 2027, while simpler recycling will be introduced by March 31, 2026. The council faces a potential funding gap of around £138,000 for the new food waste collection, despite receiving over £1 million in government support. Further details on trade waste collection are expected from the government in January.
