NotebookLM is not a personal knowledge management (PKM) system, despite its research capabilities. PKM systems help users collect, organize, and retrieve information to build meaningful, usable knowledge bases. NotebookLM's limitations include its inability to connect disparate ideas across notes and its reliance on uploaded sources for analysis. Unlike PKM tools like Obsidian, its connections are internal to documents and lack long-term, evolving organization. Furthermore, NotebookLM lacks true note-taking features and its content is locked within its ecosystem, posing risks to long-term accessibility. It is best used alongside a dedicated PKM system.
