Norway omits Sandefjord–Stokke rail funds again; mayor cries foul

nrk.no (Swedish) —

The Norwegian government has again omitted funding for the planned double track railway between Sandefjord and Stokke from the 2027 state budget, leaving the project in limbo. The Sandefjord mayor accuses the government of deceiving the region. The plan was approved by local politicians in 2019, and Bane Nor was tasked with planning in June 2025, but no funds were allocated for 2026 or 2027. Land restrictions tied to the project may be lifted by June 2027 if planning funds remain absent, according to Bane Nor. Farmer Per Morten Nilsen, whose land has been restricted for over eight years, says the process has been chaotic and hopes to regain market value if restrictions are lifted. Labor politician Truls Vasvik denies the plan is dead, while other Vestfoldbanen sections proceed.
