Northern Territory's renewable energy goal faces uncertainty
The Northern Territory government plans to extend the life of the Channel Island gas-fired power station, built in 1987, which was set to retire in 2027. This move raises doubts about the territory's goal of 50% renewable energy by 2030. Territory Generation will prolong the use of three gas generators until 2031 and 2035 to ensure reliable energy supply for about 150,000 residents. The Utilities Commission has stated that this extension is not a long-term solution and highlights the need for new energy investments. The government is also facing challenges with gas supply, relying on emergency gas purchases due to issues with the Blacktip gas field. In 2023-24, $43 million was spent on emergency gas deals, indicating ongoing supply concerns.
