North Carolina bill mandates annual UNC-NC State matchups

A new bill has been introduced in the North Carolina House to protect the sports rivalry between the University of North Carolina (UNC) and NC State University. This legislation, called House Bill 469, ensures that the two universities will play each other each year in several key sports. The bill mandates annual matchups in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and softball. It comes at a time when there are concerns about conference realignments that could potentially keep the schools apart. Rep. Brenden Jones, the House's Republican majority leader and one of the bill's sponsors, emphasized the importance of maintaining the rivalry, stating that the bill provides security for the future of these games, even if the schools are not in the same conference. In addition to the annual games, the bill requires that the baseball and softball teams play three games against each other in an academic year. Both UNC and NC State are founding members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), which is currently based in Charlotte. The ACC has faced challenges, especially in revenue and prestige compared to the Big Ten and Southeastern conferences. Recent changes have made it easier for schools to leave the ACC without severe penalties. Jones hopes the bill will keep UNC and NC State together in the same conference should they receive invitations from other leagues. Recently, the UNC System Board of Governors has been granted more authority over conference affiliations, highlighting how political factors can influence these decisions. Although previous efforts to mandate regular games with other North Carolina schools have not succeeded, Jones's leadership role may help this bill move forward. The Restoring Rivalries Act is designed to maintain the historic sports rivalry as the college athletics landscape changes. Its progress will be watched closely as it goes through the legislative process.
