Nigerian inventor's AI glasses help blind users navigate

A 20-year-old Nigerian inventor, Khalifa Aminu, is developing AI-powered smart glasses to help blind and visually impaired people detect obstacles, navigate, and stay connected with caregivers. The device combines sensors, GPS, and AI voice technology. Aminu, from Kano, showcased the latest version on X, explaining the glasses detect objects and provide location information. The GPS system can send a user's location to a caregiver's phone via WhatsApp or email if they become lost. He is now adding voice interaction to help users understand their surroundings. The project began after Aminu saw visually impaired people struggle with mobility in his community. His earlier prototype used ultrasonic and infrared sensors, tested by a visually impaired man whose feedback guided improvements. The technology remains under development, with no independent evidence yet that it can replace established mobility aids.
