Nigeria launches online portal for birth and death certificates

legit.ng

Nigeria launched a digital platform on Tuesday allowing citizens to apply for birth and death certificates online, reducing physical visits and paperwork. The National Population Commission developed the portal, announced by the National Orientation Agency. The self-service portal enables birth and death registration, birth attestation, record corrections, and certificate verification. Online birth registration costs ₦5,000, while death registration remains free. Applicants need a National Identification Number, and children must be born in Nigeria with at least one Nigerian parent. Birth registration for children under five stays free at NPC centres, and approved certificates can only be downloaded once. The launch follows NIMC data showing 127 million Nigerians enrolled in the NIN database as of December 2025.
