Nigeria launches ECOWAS national biometric identity cards

Nigeria has launched ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Cards, aiming to boost regional trade, security, and ease of doing business. The cards, conceived 11 years ago by the Nigeria Immigration Service, are part of an ECOWAS protocol to address security and economic challenges. Six countries have already implemented the project. This initiative is expected to facilitate free movement within ECOWAS, enhance identity management, and reduce pressure on passport systems, marking a significant step towards regional integration.
