NGCP warns of rotating brownouts in Visayas due to power shortage

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced Thursday it may implement rotating brownouts in the Visayas due to inadequate power supply, with outages scheduled in multiple provinces from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. The company issued red and yellow alerts for the Visayas and Mindanao grids as unavailable power plants and rising demand strained supply. In Visayas, peak demand is expected at 2,575 megawatts against only 2,187 MW available, with 30 plants on forced outage. For Mindanao, a red alert runs from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with peak demand estimated at 2,546 MW versus 2,480 MW supply. A red alert indicates insufficient supply for consumer demand, while a yellow alert signals inadequate operating margin for contingency requirements.
