New Zealand limits farm-to-forestry conversions with new legislation

newstalkzb.co.nz

The Government has announced new legislation to limit full farm-to-forestry conversions. Category 1 to 5 land will no longer be eligible for conversion, while Category 6 land can convert only 15,000 hectares. Minister of Agriculture Todd McClay stated that these changes fulfill a promise made to voters. A moratorium will prevent full conversions, but farmers can still convert up to 25 percent of their land for the emissions trading scheme.
