New Zealand cancels Gloriavale Christian School registration over safety concerns

New Zealand's education secretary has cancelled the registration of Gloriavale Christian School as a private school, citing serious concerns about student safety. The school remains open pending a High Court challenge, with a judicial review scheduled for October. The ministry has applied to the court to lift interim orders preventing closure, following a special Education Review Office review. The school has around 80 students, and officials will work with families to determine practical closure timing while prioritising student interests. Education Minister Erica Stanford expressed confidence in the secretary's decision. Previous ministry letters detailed concerns about students being limited to Year 11, inadequate support for abuse victims, and unsafe conditions, while a separate review found homeschooling by Gloriavale families failed legal requirements.
