New York prisons struggle with camera coverage despite $600 million investment
New York state prisons still lack adequate camera coverage despite a decade-long initiative and over $600 million spent. Currently, only 11 of 42 facilities have full camera systems, leaving many areas without surveillance, which inmates say increases the risk of violence. The issue gained attention after the release of body camera footage showing officers assaulting an inmate, prompting Governor Kathy Hochul to announce plans for expanded camera coverage. However, the Department of Corrections has been slow to implement these updates. In response to ongoing concerns, new policies now require guards to keep body cameras on during shifts. Despite these changes, many facilities still face challenges with camera functionality and coverage, leaving inmates vulnerable in blind spots.
