New York Expands Speed Cameras to MTA Bridge and Tunnel Work Zones, 700,000 Tickets Issued

New York State is expanding automated speed enforcement to construction zones on MTA bridges and tunnels, with 700,000 speeding tickets already issued since the program began. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the initiative to reduce worker injuries and fatalities at work sites. The radar-based system photographs vehicles exceeding the speed limit and records time, location, and lane data. Tickets are issued after certified technicians verify the information, with fines starting at $50 for a first offense, rising to $75 and $100 for repeat violations within 18 months. The Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program, launched in 2021 and extended to 2031, now covers MTA and bridge authority roads. In 2024, over 450 vehicles entered closed work zones, causing more than 150 injuries and four deaths. Violations are civil penalties without license points or insurance notification.
