New York City is celebrating what would have been Shirley Chisholm's 100th birthday by declaring November 30 as 'Shirley Chisholm Day.' The City Council approved this honor last week. A new exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York will showcase her life and legacy. Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1968 and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Chisholm served in Congress until 1983 and later taught at Mount Holyoke College. She also co-founded the National Political Congress of Black Women.
