New water flea species discovered in Western Ghats near Pune
A new species of water flea, named Bryospilus (Indobryospilus) bharaticus, has been discovered near Pune, India. This is the first representative of its genus found in Tropical Asia, highlighting the biodiversity of the Western Ghats. The species was found on moss at Korigad Fort, indicating a unique adaptation to semi-terrestrial environments. Researchers noted that this discovery emphasizes the importance of protecting such habitats from human disturbance. The study, published in September 2024, suggests that these organisms have ancient evolutionary ties to the prehistoric landmass Gondwanaland. The researchers warn that rising pollution could threaten these sensitive species.
