New Syrian government includes first woman minister
Ahmad al-Charaa, the interim president of Syria, announced a new government on Saturday. This government does not have a prime minister and includes several loyal ministers. One notable appointment is Hind Kabawat, a Christian woman named Minister of Social Affairs and Labor. Al-Charaa, who led the offensive that removed Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, emphasized his goal of building a strong and stable state. The new government was expected to be announced on March 1 but was revealed today. Among the appointed ministers are Assaad al-Chaibani, the Foreign Minister, and Mourhaf Abou Qasra, the Defense Minister, both retaining their positions. Raed al-Saleh was named Minister for Emergency and Disaster Situations. The interim president also signed a constitutional declaration establishing a five-year transition period. He expressed hope for a new chapter in Syria, replacing oppression with justice. The temporary constitution maintains Islam as the official religion and sets Islamic law as the main source of legislation.
