Santorini volcano erupted decades before Pharaoh Ahmose, a new study reveals, challenging its link to early New Kingdom Egypt. Radiocarbon dating of Egyptian artifacts and volcanic samples indicates the eruption occurred earlier than Ahmose's reign, suggesting the "Tempest Stela" does not describe this event. The findings support a later chronology for the New Kingdom and place the volcanic disaster in the Second Intermediate Period, before Egypt's reunification.
