New method converts factory exhaust CO2 into useful chemicals

Scientists have developed a method to convert carbon dioxide from untreated factory exhaust into useful chemicals, potentially making industrial carbon capture more practical. The new system uses specially designed organic electrolytes that disrupt hydrogen-bond networks, suppressing competing reactions and allowing CO2 conversion to dominate even with only 1% CO2 and oxygen present. The team also demonstrated solar-powered operation at 5.5% efficiency, and the approach could benefit steel, cement, and chemical industries struggling to cut emissions.
