New device shows promise in helping stroke patients regain arm movement

A new device, known as the "ear zapper," is being tested to help stroke patients regain arm movement. The trial, led by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, uses mild electrical pulses to stimulate a nerve in the ear, potentially improving communication between the brain and the arm. The £2.5 million trial began in November 2023 and involves around 240 patients. Participants use the device for one hour daily, five days a week, over 12 weeks. This non-invasive treatment allows patients to perform therapy at home, unlike previous methods requiring surgery. Phil Herbert, a stroke survivor, has seen improvements in his arm movement after participating in the trial. He can now lift his arm and perform daily tasks, although he still aims to regain full use of his fingers.
